David Lynch: A Typographic Poster

For this project we were tasked with making a poster that summarizes the essence of an assigned "Cultural Hero" through typography. The Cultural Hero I was assigned was David Lynch, a surrealist filmmaker and visual artist.

I started by researching the types of artwork he had done in his lifetime, as well as the aesthetics of his films. I found my inspiration in his charcoal art pieces and the title frame of his famous television show, "Twin Peaks."

I knew with throughout my sketching process that I wanted to recreate the charcoal he uses in his artwork as well as the smokey element that makes an appearance in a lot of his pieces. I also knew I wanted to draw inspiration from his writing that he has in those art pieces as well and use those as my main type for this poster.

The most challenging part of creating my poster was attempting to layout all my elements in a way that looked visually pleasing. If I could recreate my creation over and improve parts of it, I would probably focus more on the arrangement of the elements more, though I think where I ended up makes sense, I do think even more tries and experimentation would still be beneficial to the process. If I could learn a new tool instantly, I would choose to learn how to better integrate my work off the different applications that I use to design because I find that different elements are better done on different platforms and knowing how to use them together could elevate the work I produce. If someone else wanted to create something similar I would say that they should attempt using an actual piece of charcoal for the design and see how that works when scanning it into illustrator.
